Eighteen Japanese university students read English narratives containing context and target sentences separated by one (the local condition) or four filler sentences (the global condition) with their eye movements recorded. The results showed that readers constantly monitored protagonist coherence; however, they had increased difficulty monitoring causal and intentional coherence. Keyphrases: L2 reading, coherence monitoring, eye tracking, narrative comprehension, situation models
