Abstract

This study presents a filtering antenna (filtenna) that operates at 3.5 GHz. The filtering antenna was developed by cascading a ring resonator and a regular diamond-shaped patch antenna at the same frequency. The antenna and the resonator were both designed and optimized to operate at 3.5 GHz for 5G MIMO base stations. The filtering performance of the single element filtenna at the intended frequency exhibited a single filtering pole, and its gain was 5.98 dBi. As a result, a 3.5 GHz microstrip power divider was created to form a 1×2 array of the filtenna. Finally, a filtering antenna array was designed and optimized with an in-band gain of 8.07 dBi, and two attained resonant poles, it performs better than the single filtenna. According to the results, the filtering antenna operated admirably at the desired operating frequency. A MIMO antenna was created using the suggested design and was simulated for several inter-element distances around the guided wavelength of the filtenna (from 45mm to 55mm). This was done to further demonstrate its viability. Compared to the transmission coefficient S21 of -22 dB observed for the conventional antenna, the worst-case transmission coefficient value for the filtenna is better than -45 dB. This demonstrated the filtering antenna's ability to reject interference from nearby neighboring antennas, and hence suitable for the sub-6 GHz fifth generation (5G) communications.
