Effect of Water Absorption on the Behavior of Bio-Composites

Abstract

The main goal of this work is to study the water absorption of natural composites based on an epoxy matrix and flax and sisal fibers at different architectures as well as their hybridization.
Regarding fiber reinforcements, our choice fell on flax and sisal fibers because of their excellent mechanical properties combining rigidity, resistance and lightness. Added to this is the fact that they are widely available.
Therefore, for a better development of these composites, it is necessary to have additional information on their durability. Thus having low water absorption properties, so they can be used in applications where moisture might be involved or they might get wet at times. The low water absorption also ensures the durability of the composite.
We first analyzed the kinetics of water diffusion in the different composites, using an optimization approach based on Fick's models.
The procedure consists of following the mass absorbed over time until water saturation. Therefore, the samples were weighed after being immersed in water.
We also studied the effect of several geometric parameters and the orientation of fibers on the kinetics of water diffusion within composites.
The results show significant improvements in behavior for composites at different architectures compared to hybrid composites.
