Call for Papers
Latin American Conference on Eye Movements (LACEM) Viña del Mar, Chile | December 10–12, 2025
We are pleased to announce the First Latin American Conference on Eye Movements (LACEM), which will take place in Viña del Mar, Chile, from December 10th to 12th, 2025. As the first event of its kind in the region, LACEM aims to establish a robust international platform for the exchange of knowledge and collaboration across disciplines.
The conference welcomes contributions from a wide range of basic and applied research areas—including psychology, linguistics, neurophysiology, computer science, education, marketing, and more—with a special focus on topics relevant to Latin America and languages spoken in the region.
LACEM 2025 is organized by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) and the Language & Cognition Laboratory
We invite researchers to join us and contribute to the growth of this dynamic and interdisciplinary community.
Keynote Lectures
LACEM 2025 will feature keynote presentations by internationally recognized scholars whose work has significantly advanced the study of eye movements and related fields.
Eye-Tracking in Instructed Second Language Acquisition: A Historical Perspective and a Call for Inclusive, Representative Research
by Aline Godfroid (Michigan State University, USA)
Aline Godfroid is Professor of Second Language Studies and TESOL at Michigan State University, where she co-directs the Second Language Studies Eye-tracking Lab. Her research bridges second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and quantitative methods, with a strong emphasis on the use of eye-tracking to investigate real-time language processing. She has received support from agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the Humanities and Arts Research Program, and has published extensively in top-tier journals including Applied Psycholinguistics, Language Learning, and Studies in Second Language Acquisition. She currently serves as Associate Editor of Language Learning and as Vice President of the European Second Language Association.
Cognitive Engagement During Reading
by Johanna Kaakinen (University of Turku, Finland)
Johanna Kaakinen is Professor of Psychology at the University of Turku, Finland, where she leads the Turku EyeLabs and heads the "Skills and Learning" research theme within the INVEST Research Flagship Centre. Her work explores the cognitive and neurocognitive mechanisms that underlie reading comprehension and literary engagement, using eye-tracking to examine how readers process complex written material. She directs several major research initiatives, including the FINSCI consortium (funded by the Strategic Research Council) and the IMMERSED project (supported by the Academy of Finland). Her publications appear in leading journals such as Journal of Educational Psychology, Memory & Cognition, and Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition. She is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of Discourse Processes, a premier journal in discourse and cognitive psychology.
Workshops
LACEM 2025 will offer workshops led by experienced researchers, aimed at providing practical training in eye movement research.
Translating Research Questions into Eye Movement Studies
by Denis Drieghe & João Vieira (University of Southampton)
Denis Drieghe is Professor of Experimental Psychology and Deputy Head of School (Research & Enterprise) at the University of Southampton, UK. His research focuses on the cognitive mechanisms of reading, particularly parafoveal processing, word skipping, and foveal-parafoveal interactions. He has led influential cross-linguistic studies examining reading across languages such as English, Dutch, Chinese, and Arabic. His work has been widely published in journals such as Cognition and Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, and he is recognized internationally for his contributions to eye-tracking methodology in reading and bilingualism.
João Vieira is a PhD candidate in Psychology at the University of Southampton. He holds a degree in Psychology (2017) and a Master’s in Linguistics (2020) from the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil, where he was awarded a CNPq studentship. His research focuses on eye movements during reading, with an emphasis on cognitive processing and experimental design in psycholinguistics. João brings a valuable perspective on multilingualism and the adaptation of eye-tracking research to Latin American contexts.
Analyzing and Reporting Eye-Movement Data
by Bernhard Angele (Bournemouth University)
Bernhard Angele is Principal Academic in Psychology at Bournemouth University, United Kingdom, where he investigates eye movements and cognitive control in skilled adult reading. His work focuses on parafoveal preview effects and the coordination between visual attention and language processing during reading. Using eye-tracking, he has shown how parafoveal information influences word recognition and skipping decisions, even in the face of contradictory context. Bernhard also conducts research on auditory distraction, multitasking, and education psychology, and is committed to advancing open science, statistical modeling, and evidence synthesis in cognitive psychology.
