Digital documentation and reconstruction of cultural heritage sites and artifacts have undergone a significant transformation due to advances in photogrammetry and laser scanning technologies. These methodologies enable the creation of highly accurate digital twins—virtual replicas of cultural assets—that serve as valuable tools for conservation, education, and public engagement.Recent studies highlight the integration of photogrammetry and laser scanning as an optimal approach for 3D documentation, leveraging the strengths of both techniques:
- Photogrammetry captures intricate textures and color details but requires careful image alignment.
- Laser scanning excels in geometric precision but struggles with reflective surfaces and large datasets.
By combining these technologies, the digital twin methodology overcomes their respective limitations, creating comprehensive, high-fidelity 3D models applicable to conservation, virtual tourism, and research.
